A Genuine Forger

Watched on a CX flight to HKG. March 2017.

This little documentary pretty much blew my mind. The dude – Guy Ribes – is so darned talented, and has put so much effort into perfecting the art of making forgeries, and his philosophy is so skewed yet also makes perfect sense.

Ribes’ life is like a movie – tough beginnings (whorehouses and pimps, a navy career that got stopped short because his father shot his neighbours, slaving for silk printers, etc), chance encounters (the people who helped train him to be a great forger), adventures everywhere (fishing in Venezuela!), and then downfall…

This is a great commentary on the art world, actually. Super insightful and just so interesting. Loved it.
